Taza is a one-of-a-kind development, rooted in community, culture and connection to the land. At the heart of this bold vision is Travis Oberg, Taza’s Vice President of Land Development. With a passion for creating meaningful spaces and a commitment to long-lasting impact, Travis brings a wealth of experience and a deep sense of purpose to his role. We sat down with Travis to discover everything about his important role at Taza. Read on below for insights into his professional background, discover what excites him about his role and how the team is shaping a vibrant, sustainable and culturally significant future at Taza.
Can you tell us about your background and what drew you to this role as the VP of Land Development for Taza
Throughout my career, I’ve always sought out projects that leave a lasting legacy, something I can be truly proud of. What drew me to Taza was the rare opportunity to contribute to a mixed-use development that stands apart not just in Alberta, but across Canada and North America. The diversity, the intentionality behind placemaking, and the deep cultural significance make it incredibly special. I hope to bring my experience and passion for building meaningful places to this role, while also drawing inspiration from Taza’s purpose: to create a community that reflects the vision of the Tsuut’ina Nation and offers something for everyone to enjoy.
What most excites you about your new role at Taza?
What excites me most about this role is that we’re still in the early stages, and I see it like we’re planting the seed. There’s something incredibly energizing about being part of something from the ground up, where there’s so much opportunity to shape and grow something truly special.
On a personal level, this project is close to where I’ve built my life and raised my family, so there’s a sense of familiarity and connection that grounds the work. It feels like I’m contributing to something greater, something that will carry meaning well beyond my role.
What are some of the key projects you are focused on right now?
Right now, a big focus is shaping what Tsuut’ina Parkway (our main street) will look and feel like. With paving and planting underway, we’re starting to establish the foundation for a space that people will be able to truly take advantage of in the future. At the same time, we’re preparing for our first public space within the wetland area, which will be a more natural and reflective place for the community. Together, these two spaces represent the diversity we’re building into Taza, one more social and active, where you might meet a friend for coffee or lunch, and the other more peaceful and grounded in nature. Both are powerful symbols of what will make this community truly special.
What makes this development unique from other projects you’ve collaborated on?
Three things come to mind that make Taza truly unique.
First is the location, it’s incredibly central, with strong transportation connections that make it highly accessible.
Second is its proximity to nature. Being near the Weaselhead Flats and North Glenmore Park means residents can access breathtaking views and natural spaces as part of their daily lives, it’s a rare blend of urban convenience and environmental connection.
And third, and perhaps most defining, is the opportunity to shape a community that reflects and celebrates the culture of Tsuut’ina Nation. Through storytelling, public spaces, and design, we’re embedding something here that simply can’t be replicated: a sense of place that’s deeply rooted in identity, meaning, and history.
What steps are being taken to ensure that the construction projects are aligned with the values and vision of Tsuut’ina Nation?
From both a design and construction perspective, we’re taking active steps to ensure that every project reflects the values and vision of Tsuut’ina Nation. This includes regular engagement with Nation leadership and cultural advisors, as well as embedding key principles directly into our design guidelines. These guidelines ensure that every project, whether a public space or a building, is approached with cultural relevance in mind. From the stories we tell, to the themes we highlight, to the elements we incorporate into the built environment, we’re committed to making sure Tsuut’ina culture is not only represented, but respected and celebrated throughout the development.
What measures are being taken to incorporate green building practices or renewable energy solutions in the construction of these new spaces?
From the beginning, sustainability has been something we’ve committed to building into Taza in ways that are both thoughtful and practical. A good example is the building where our office is located, which features solar panels embedded into its exterior design.
At the community level, our Village Development Plans focus on walkability, integration with natural systems, and connected public spaces. We’re also exploring participation in the Built Green New Communities Pilot Program, which would help guide our approach moving forward. While we’re still early in the process, our goal is to leave a lasting legacy by making conscious choices about how we interact with the land and how we consider the needs of future generations.
What do you believe are the most exciting opportunities in Taza’s development, both for the community and for the broader region?
One of the most exciting opportunities at Taza lies in its unique ability to blend culture, community, and connection to nature into a place where people can envision living for generations to come. Its strategic location, combined with a thoughtful vision grounded in the values of Tsuut’ina Nation, positions Taza as a destination within the broader region and a place where people can learn, experience nature, and find a balance between living, working, and playing. This integration of cultural heritage with modern development creates a powerful opportunity to build something truly lasting and meaningful, not just for residents but for the entire region.

Community input helps us raise the bar and ensures that, as this project evolves, it truly reflects the needs and aspirations of those it serves.
Travis’s perspective offers a meaningful look into the passion and purpose driving Taza, showcasing that when you build with intention, you create more than just spaces, but community.
