The buffalo is more than an animal to the Tsuut’ina people; it is a gift from the Creator, a symbol of survival, stewardship, and reciprocity with the Earth. For generations, the buffalo offered all that was needed to live well: nourishment, warmth, tools, and a spiritual bond that shaped identity and tradition. The land now home to Buffalo Run, one of Taza’s three community villages, was once a vital hunting ground and a lasting source of sustenance and strength. Today, that legacy lives on through The Shops at Buffalo Run, a dynamic place where culture, commerce, and community move together, carrying forward the resilience and generosity that have long defined this land.

What began as an ambitious vision has grown into a vibrant retail destination southwest of Calgary, alive with activity, connection, and purpose. When Costco was announced as the anchor tenant in 2019, a turning point arrived: plans became a pathway to possibility. Since then, a careful mix of tenants has taken root, creating a thriving mixed-use destination shaped by intention, community collaboration, and a deep sense of place. It stands today as a beacon of cultural and economic vitality: welcoming, grounded, and distinctly Tsuut’ina.

From Anchor to Heartbeat: How The Shops at Buffalo Run Became a Community

The opening of Costco in 2020 marked more than the arrival of a major retailer; it was the first step in realizing Taza’s vision for The Shops at Buffalo Run, a commercial hub serving the Buffalo Run village, Tsuut’ina Nation, and southwest Calgary. This vision is anchored in land stewardship, cultural continuity, and long-term prosperity, guiding every decision from tenant selection to design. Nation members benefit from opportunities to engage with and celebrate their culture within the community. Shoppers enjoy a unique shopping experience that blends diverse offerings with cultural richness. Potential tenants find value in joining a thriving, purpose-driven retail centre that promises sustainable growth and collaboration.

From the beginning, The Shops at Buffalo Run were imagined as more than a shopping destination. The tenant mix has been curated, pairing national and regional brands with Indigenous-owned businesses that reflect the land, celebrate Tsuut’ina culture, and support Indigenous entrepreneurship. The result is a retail experience that feels welcoming and authentic, a place where everyday needs are met, and identity is honoured.

Today, The Shops at Buffalo Run are operating at more than 90 percent capacity, with new retailers on the horizon. It’s a dynamic, diverse collection of businesses that not only support daily life but also create opportunities to meet, gather, and connect.

Placemaking Rooted in Tsuut’ina Culture

The Shops at Buffalo Run are guided by respect for the land and for Tsuut’ina culture. Indigenous knowledge, language, and art are woven throughout the site, inviting visitors to experience the spirit of this place. The Dene language is incorporated into signage and architectural motifs, while public art and murals by renowned Tsuut’ina artists bring stories to life.

Unveiled at the grand opening, the central mural by Nathan P. Meguinis at The Shops at Buffalo Run acts as a focal point within the development, weaving together elements of land, culture, and storytelling connected to Tsuut’ina Nation.

These elements create an experience that goes beyond function. They offer a sense of belonging, a connection to the land and its history, and an invitation to learn, honouring the stewardship that shaped this community and continues to guide it forward.
